Bruce Springsteen was honored with an award from the Kennedy Center by President Barack Obama at a White House reception on Sunday.
"I am the president, but he is the boss," the president joked as he introduced the star.
"We worked very hard to make our music is part of life and live to our fans," said Springsteen, 60. "So it's a recognition that to thread its way into the culture in some way. It's very rewarding," he said.
Some of Springsteen's songs were sung by John Mellencamp, Jennifer Nettles, Melissa Etheridge and Sting at the ceremony.The actor Robert De Niro, comedian Mel Brooks, a star of jazz Dave Brubeck and opera singer Grace Bumbry also received honors.Kennedy acknowledges the personalities of the arts for their contributions to American culture. A television program of the ceremony is to be shown on CBS in the United States on December 29.
